Hong Kong media man Jimmy Lai’s sponsorship has been canceled

Hong Kong Media mogul Jimmy Lai’s sponsorship was canceled after prosecutors successfully petitioned the city’s highest court to return him to custody.

Lai was released on bail on December 23 after three weeks in custody on charges of fraud and endangering national security. The appeal hearing is scheduled for February 1.

On Thursday, the court said it was „reasonably arguable“ that the previous judge’s decision was wrong and that the bail order was invalid.

He was subsequently charged again on December 12 under the comprehensive national security law imposed by Beijing on suspicion of colluding with foreign forces and endangering national security.

Lai is among a string of pro-democracy and pro-democracy activists who have been arrested by Hong Kong police in recent months as the authorities intensify their crackdown on dissent in the semi-autonomous Chinese region.
